Dumfries 2s enjoyed an away trip to Glasgow to play Stepps 2s on Saturday 31 January. With a squad of 13 players, they soon settled into brisk play, taking the ball to the opposition. The first 2 quarters saw Dumfries contain Stepps, making good progress themselves – just not able to make that final step towards a goal. There was good forward running from Phoebe; Effie; Danni and Jenna, finding Ava and Cerys in good positions. Then, there was also good defending from Lily in goals through Susan; Jane and Kate, and good interlinking play from Angie; Beata and Gladys. Stepps played their part by breaking up enough of the Dumfries play – the score at half-time remained at 0-0.
Into the second half, and within 3 minutes Dumfries had won a penalty corner – injected by Gladys to Angie B who smashed the ball from the right of the D straight into the right corner of the goal. 0-1 to Dumfries. The score remained at 0-1 at the end of the third quarter, despite continued attacks from Dumfries. The 4th quarter was so close, with Stepps working hard on the counter-attack, and Dumfries having to quickly turn from attack into defence. However, Dumfries stood firm – defending penalty corners and calmly clearing the ball out of the reach of the Stepps attackers - at the final whistle they had a well-deserved 0-1 win.
Squad: Lily Callander; Susan Hodgson; Jane Young; Kate Dunlop; Angie Beattie; Beata Kucinski (Capt); Danni Mullen; Gladys McClymont; Phoebe Hodgson; Effie Gunn; Cerys Given; Ava Stenton; Jenna Youngman.
Well done to Effie Gunn who was voted Opposition Player of the Match.
