After a week off, due to the stormy weather, the ladies 2s met Uddingston's ladies 4s at King George pitch here in Dumfries.
It was incredible to have a big team of 15 players, a fantastic turn out which coincided perfectly with Women in Sport Week. What a strong and empowering representation.
The game started with Uddongston having pushback. A quick strong attack by the opposing side, but they met a strong defensive line from the ladies in red, and any attempts at a shot were thwarted. Shots at goal by Uddingston failed with some impressive saves by the goalkeeper, Angie McNay, who came away from her usual outfield position to take up the spot between the posts. Despite saying she was not going to do any diving, Angie threw herself around fearlessly, and almost injured herself in the process. Not surprisingly, she earned both opposition POTM and Captain's POTM.
The ladies 2s made some great movements up the right wing, and some cracking hits up to the left and right corners by Angie Beattie, where Ava Stenton and Phoebe Hodgson worked hard with the midfields, to capitalise on the opportunity. Unfortunately, this time, Uddingston's goalkeeper fought hard to stop any shots from going in.
The first two quarters saw the Dumfries ladies defending 3 short corners, with Jane, Angie B, Gladys, Susan and Angie McNay ensuring Uddingston were unable to secure any goals.
The ladies 2s were awarded a few short corners in each half, with superb strikes by Angie B and amazing support by Caitlin, Scarlet and Ava.
Nearing the end of the game, and still 0-0, an unfortunate tumble by an Uddingston player, saw her take a little knock to the head with a stick….and with the sight of some blood, there were players fleeing the scene and others attending the wound. It was decided that the game would end 2 minutes earlier. A chat with the Uddingston captain later that evening, put minds at ease and the player was all good after a speedy trip to A&E.
A huge congratulations to our newest players Phoebe Adamson-Cell, Christine Bell, Kate Dunlop, Susan Hodgson and Cerys Given for their brilliant play. And a massive well done to Jenna Youngman on her debut game.
Thanks to Beth and Morven for umpiring
