Hard day at KGV

Sunday 7 December saw Dumfries Ladies 2 host Clydesdale Western Ladies 7s at home at KGV with an unfortunate 0-6 loss.
Dumfries fielded a young team of players - many of them playing out of position, due to two of the core members travelling away for Masters training. Their absence in midfield was noticed with Dumfries playing the majority of the match defensively, within their own half.
Mullen, supported by Youngman and Kucinski-Thomson, had to work exceptionally hard in Midfield against a young, well drilled Clydesdale team. We missed the power hits of Beattie, belting the ball up the pitch, making it hard work for the girls on the pitch to break into Clydesdale’s half. Despite legs tiring, heads remained up and as always, the Ladies 2s never gave up, powering through the match despite being on the back foot.
The second quarter saw a penalty flick awarded to Clydesdale Western Ladies due to the ball being stopped on the line by Mullen. In her first ever competitive flick, Callander (GK) impressively dived, clipping the ball with her glove. Unfortunately, the deflection landed in the bottom corner of the goal, rewarding Clydesdale with a goal.
Half time team talks and substitutions were positive and Dumfries Ladies 2s came out stronger in the 3rd quarter. Some lovely side line drills between Dunlop, Young and Mullin saw Dumfries break into Clydesdale’s half, but sadly came up against a strong defence.
Defensive Penalty corners were the set play in the third and fourth quarters, with Callander protecting the goal amazingly. At one point there was a game of ping pong between Callander and many of the Clydesdale team, finally ending in the ball crossing the line. Callander (GK) was deservedly awarded Opposition Player of the Match for her GK efforts.
All Ladies played exceptionally well and special mentions to debutants Lumb and Hunter. A tough game to start with but both did amazingly well.
Team: Callander (GK), Hodgson (S), Lumb, Dunlop, Young, Kucinski-Thomson, Youngman, Mullen, Hodgson (P), Topping (C), Stenton, Given and Hunter.
