Dumfries 2’s welcomed Helensburgh 2’s to the KGV Park in their first game of the New YearThe match started briskly with both teams matching each other in endeavour and possession of the ball with chances being created at both ends during the first quarter but the scoreline remained goalless with both keepers keeping the forwards at bayThe second quarter started much the same way but Helensburgh’s experience began to dominate play and following several short corners, they managed to open the scoring after their initial strike at goal was saved but the rebound was fiercely despatched. This setback however was quickly overcome when a through ball from Iain Callander found the stick of youngster Gordon in the Helensburgh D and a deft touch or was it ricochet somehow beat the keeper to bring the scores level. This was no more than the Team deserved for their spirited play and gave the more experienced Helensburgh Team food for thought. As the halftime whistle approached a swift counterattack saw Helensburgh restore their lead with a well taken goal.Turning round at half time, Dumfries continued to keep playing well, matching their opponents with the younger players of Tom, Logan, Jack, Calum, Taylor and goalscorer Gordon showing their continuing development on and off the ball backed up by the senior players around them. Despite this however an equaliser failed to materialize and it was evident that Helensburgh were not happy to have a one-goal advantage. This was down to the Dumfries defence working just as hard to contain the Helensburgh attack and they were backed up by a good performance by their veteran Keeper Moscrop. The fourth and final quarter of the match saw Helensburgh eventually put the game to bed with two late goals as legs tired and experience amongst the visiting players began to win through but the home team can be proud of its performance as they didn’t allow themselves to be overawed by their opponents and gave a good account of themselves against the visitors.Grateful thanks to James and Ryan for umpiring the game.
