Victory for the super 2s

Dumfries 2’s welcomed Hillhead 7’s to the KGV last Saturday, conscious of a recent run of bad results but still full of enthusiasm and confident they could get something from this game.

Dumfries started brightly, with the mix of youth and experience on the pitch instantly gelling, taking the game to their opposition but this was comfortably dealt with by the Hillhead players who quickly set up several attacking moves of their own. From one of these attacks down the left wing, Hillhead took advantage of some poor defending to break into the home side’s D and slot the ball past the advancing Keeper.Spurred on by this early setback, Dumfries settled down and began playing the ball a bit more purposely around the pitch creating more attacks of their own and from one of these, Callander (Senior) scored a deserved equaliser from a reverse stick shot beating the Hillhead Keeper on his line. This ended the scoring for the first half but play continued to flow in both directions of the pitch with both defences working resolutely to deny any further goals being scored at either end.

Turning around at halftime with further words of encouragement from the senior players in their ranks to use the space on the pitch better as well as their pace against the older Hillhead players, the youngsters in the Dumfries team continued to play well with Jack Callander, Josh Campbell, Adam Kerr, Toby Macklin, Liam Mills, Fred Kershaw and Jorah Turnbull all contributing to a good team performance alongside the mix of senior and experienced players around them. Unfortunately Liam’s brother Ryan had to leave the pitch very early on in the game after picking up a foot injury.Play was very evenly contested throughout the half before Callander (Senior) added his second goal for the home side on the hour mark with almost a carbon copy of his first. This pushed the home side on to gain the win and five minutes later the result was put out of Hillhead’s reach following a good attack from Dumfries. Josh Campbell on the right wing created space in the visitors D for Callander (Senior) to push into and square the ball to Jorah Turnbull at the far post to score the final goal of the game to give Dumfries a well-deserved winning scoreline of 3-1.

Grateful thanks from all players to Gladys McClymont and Georgia Hook for umpiring the game.
