7. Club History


Dumfries Hockey Club was formed in 2009 with the merger of Dumfries Hockey Club (Men) and Dumfries Ladies Hockey Club. As a sport, hockey has been played in Dumfries dating back to 1898! A brief summary of hockey in Dumfries is below

1898 - Occupations, recreations and amusements continue as usual, but Hockey now becomes established as a regular winter game, and is played on a field to the east of the Crichton Farm Steading.

1900 - a field to the south of Brownhall right-of-way and bordering Bankend Road' and west part of this field next to the farm steading is used as the hockey pitch.

1901 - Hockey is still played on the field east of the Crichton farm steading.

1904 - Outdoor and indoor employments, games and amusements continue as usual at the Crichton. Hockey again becomes popular.

1906 - The Hockey Club has difficulty at times in arranging matches owing to the lack of other clubs in the South of Scotland, where the game does not seem to have made headway elsewhere.

1908 - Hockey matches are played between Crichton, Dumfries, Maxwelltown and Southern Rovers.

1909 - Hockey continues as formerly. Only a few hockey matches can be arranged owing to the scarcity of local clubs.

1923 - Hockey is revived after the opening of the enlarged Recreational Grounds at the Crichton.

1930 - On its inauguration the Crichton Royal Club affiliates and incorporates 17 existing clubs including hockey.

1931 - The hockey club has a very successful season, playing 10 matches and winning all.

1989 - Nithsdale District Council start planning for the installation of a synthetic pitch on the King George V Park.

2009 - Dumfries Hockey Club (Men) and Dumfries Ladies Hockey Club merge to form Dumfries Hockey Club.
