Dumfries Ladies’ 2s welcomed Glasgow Accies 3s to KGV Park
(QOS Academy) on Saturday 19 October for the 2s’ first home
game of the season, with 2s’ debuts for Emma Bell, Mhairi
Nelson and Paula McQuiston.
The visitors settled quickly into their game, and were soon
moving the ball up the pitch, into the Dumfries defensive
quarter. Most of these attacks broke down, and Dumfries were
clearing the ball out wide, and making their own progress up
the pitch. The balance of the first quarter tipped slightly
with a goal to Glasgow Accies.
The second quarter saw Dumfries continue to work hard to break
down the Glasgow Accies’ play, whilst making their own play –
some great ball-winning and wide clearances, along with
movement of the ball, but Dumfries just could not make that
telling final pass or shot on goal. Again, the balance of
play was tipped to Glasgow Accies with another goal.
Half-time 0-2.
Fuelled by a half-time talk from Mags, the 2s took to the
field with determination to “press” the opposition into
mistakes. In terms of possession; short corners; forward
moves, clearances, and “the press”, Dumfries more than held
their own, but Glasgow Accies scored more goals – 2 this time.
In the final quarter, Dumfries continued with the same
determination and though Glasgow Accies scored number 5, the
highlight of the day came when Fiona Bryce got the ball in the
attacking D, positioned it to her left, and reverse tomahawked
it into the top corner. 1-5. Yes … Accies went on to score
another goal late in the game, and the final score was 1-6,
but there were other Dumfries highlights: Lily’s blockages on
the goal-line; Katie’s clearance on the post at a penalty
corner; the ball-winning in defence; the running and pressing
of the midfield and forwards …
