A point picked up with a 10 man team
On Saturday 10 man Dumfries Mens 1s travelled to the High School of Glasgow for an away game
against GHK in a game where they knew had to pick up points. Dumfries started with the ball and
kept it well to begin with, before F Steele was called into action in goal and pulled off a couple of
great saves to keep the game goalless. Dumfries prodded and probed at GHK with The Dumfries
front line of R Johnston and C Wilson causing the home defence all manner of problems with their
movement and runs, supported by the midfield trio of J Aitken, K Palmer and W Milne. Midway
through the first half GHK had a shot on goal blocked by R Carson, only for the follow up to be
rocketed inside the far post to give the visitors the lead. Dumfries didn’t let this affect them though
and continued to threaten the GHK back line, but with no success and the scores remained
unchanged at the interval, 1-0.
GHK started with the ball in the second half and attempted to get the scoreboard moving again and
might’ve managed if it wasn’t for the fantastic double save from F Steele. Moments later Dumfries
had a short corner, injected by makeshift left back R Milne to his dad W Milne, who had an effort on
goal blocked but he followed up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to even the scores.
Approximately 10 minutes later GHK had another meaningful entrance into the Dumfries goal area,
but unfortunately with am attempted clearance S Marshall pit the ball past his own keeper, giving
the home team the lead once again. It wasn’t long though before Dumfries had another successful
short corner, with the ball coming straight to J Aitken, who managed to squeeze the ball between
the keeper’s legs, evening the scores again. A few moments before the end of the game Dumfries
had a shot on target blocked by a GHK defender on the line, leading to a penalty flick for Dumfries. R
Johnston stepped up to take the flick, but the keeper stood strong and made the save to keep the
scores even at the final whistle. Full time score 2-2.
Player of the match was tied this week between R Johnston for his running up front and F Steele in
goals for his extraordinary saves.
